in which we discuss satin vs. georgette

Wedding Veil

I went on a recon mission to David's Bridal this weekend to scope out their bridesmaid dresses, since Jess is getting married and has a coupon and wants us to be able to pick out our own dresses since she is the best bride/friend ever. So the chosen color is red, a color all three of the bridesmaids in question have been known to get down with, so good start. At DB they call the color "apple." It is full on red. Not like fire station red, just a little deeper, like my car red.

I learned some important things, namely: on the question of separates. There aren't too many choices in "apple," and the pieces in different materials clash, i.e. one cannot wear a satin bodice with a taffeta skirt. The colors are slightly different in each material and it looks off. It's too bad because some of their tops are cute. I didn't see any satin skirts but perhaps they could be ordered? After all what's the point of making separates if they don't, like, match?

This is just for me personally, not the other girls: I don't think I can work the full, floor length dress. You know, like the kind with tulle under the skirt to make it poof out? I'm just, like, too tall. I'm 5'8" in flats and the swaths of red satin a dress of that length entails...Helcat thinks it is uncouth to wear a short dress as a bridesmaid but, then again, why am I taking notes on propriety from someone who goes by the name Helcat? That question is up to Jess and the other girls. I know we were planning on wearing different styles in the same color--should we stick to the same length?

Here are some of the dresses I liked, with their style numbers if you click on the images. All in all I would be perfectly content with DB as the source, since I felt like they had plenty of options. Once we get the dresses out of the way we can get to the really important part: SHOES.

bridesmaid option 1
Empire waist (with bow) tea length satin

bridesmaid option 3
Halter tea length satin

bridesmaid option 2
Halter foot length narrow skirt satin (if we go long)

Ooh, I really like the first one. I think that calf length is okay, as long as it isn't knee length.

It's cute, right? I liked it on. Although now Jessie has introduced the possibility of going to these guys, which is, like, intoxicating. What do you think of the first set up on that page? I like it.

i think you'd be bombshell in the first one (the color is good too) - plus it's the most wear-again-able.

Which one do you mean? I don't think the first one comes in red. I like the second one a lot.

Re Liz: Yeah! I'm really happy with red. I think there's bombshell potential.

Re Laur: You're right, the first one doesn't come in the right colors, I just liked the cut. Here are two satin sets I liked. The second one is pictured two-toned, but we would just go red straight down.
Numero uno
Numero dos

FIRST OF ALL: only you call me helcat. i totally do not "go by" that name. and you know that i am very careful about my fashion recommendations. you should listen to me. i should be listened to. so there.
secondly, i would never use the word uncouth. i am not pretentious. i believe i said "you cant do that, that would just be wrong."
thirdly, all of those dresses are really beautiful. i want pictures of you in them, though. i find that dresses that have designated areas for breastage do not designate enough area for mine. for example, i would never fit into the first one. i like all of them though, but whether or not they are appropriate for bridesmaid dresses depends on the wedding style. take it up with jessie.
of the first three, i like the middle one best. of the second set, i like numero dos.

You have exactly the same favorites as I do!! That is why I trust your taste, helcat.

Oh, I am not pretentious. That's the way I talk because I am just that fucking smart.

in the second set: i like the top of numero dos, and the skirt of numero uno. And i love love love tea length (which is where it hits sorta mid-calf-to-ankle-ish) but it's not everyone's thing - and i have to say, though, anything above the knee (though at the knee is fine and i've see it done and it's lovely) wouldn't occur to me as something a bridesmaid might be in. And seperates are excellent and wear-again-a-ble so well done Bride!

you don't all have to wear the same length. unless Bride says so.

Also, everything wedding related anyone ever mentions, i am going to have an opinion on. Also, shoes are phenomenally important, and make sure they're comfy (or, wear floor length dresses, and red flip flops and good pedicures).

Upon further inspection, I don't like the one that I said I did from David's Bridal - I didn't notice the bow. I hate bows. Why do they make them? Unless it is a ribbon in the hair, tied in a bow. That is really cute, a lot of my girls wear bows like that here in the valley. So yeah, I'd go with the second David's Bridal. And as for the separates, I agree with Liz, the numero dos Top with the numero uno skirt. The numero dos skirt seems too short for a bridesmaid. And Helen! Why don't you ever update your live journal? It's very true that Hel does not go by Helcat. Though we don't always have the same taste, implying that she doesn't have good taste because of that nickname makes no sense, since Felisa made it up, few people know about it let alone call her it, and it is an awesome nickname anyway. The End.

I LOVE tea length. I'm glad you like it too. And yeah, whoever posted to the tea length sheath--I think that would be my pick, I like it even more than the A-line for my shape, although I think the skirts with more flare would look good on someone with narrower hips than me.

HEL!! Add me to your friends list!! I miss reading your blog.

Note: Tea length and A line are not mutually exclusive.
